Noer’s article is a great example of how social science findings can be misinterpreted and misused. I thus found it very unfortunate that Corcoran’s counterpoint was based on little more than anecdote and personal opinion. The multiple confounds that plague correlational findings on the issue of marital satisfaction and other topics make it difficult (if not irresponsible) to assume the kinds of cause and effect relationships that Noer advocates. Instead of criticizing the scientific basis for Noer’s thesis, however, Corcoran chose instead to rely on personal experiences and hypothetical scenerios when attempting to dismiss the credibility of his conclusions. I am more disappointed in Corcoran than I am in Noer, who at least made an attempt (albeit a confused and unenlightened one) to back his argument with real data.

precisely, although I don’t think Noer made much of an effort to back up his arguments with data, it was mostly inflammatory statements followed by the name of a journal…no article title, authors, dates…nothing to help a reader find the actual source and read it for themselves…any professor i ever had would have automatically failed that thesis, editorial or not…

Good point. References would have allowed readers to consult the original sources, which no doubt would have contained the usual caveats and limitations inherent in any good scientific paper. Still, I felt that Noer was irresponsible in failing to acknowledge the causal ambiguities that characterize the kinds of relationships he was citing (despite the “correlation does not prove causation” missive at the end). Again, this is where Corcoran’s counterpoint fell terribly short.
