Actually, my friend in immigration tells me differently.  But you go right ahead.  Good luck with that.

Hope you come out of it with at least one last shred of dignity left to you, if not your wallet.

Yeah, really, SM777. I thought marriage was slavery for women and nothing but a tool of the dreaded patriarchy. I’m surprised that these strong, independent, empowered wimmin aren’t cheering the author of the article rather than screaming about it.

Americans in general don’t have the most wonderful international reputation at the moment, but there’s also no particular clamour for American men among the women I know. Unless you’re talking about Thai brides, or someone similarly not a part of Western culture?

I will tell you exactly word for word what he says about American men and women v. the rest of the world.

He has lived in over 10 countries, and has visited over 50, he can speak 7 languages, and is a US citizen.  He has no beef, as he can do what he wants, when he wants.  So I wanted to ask him his opinion.

He says…

American men:  They are far too nice, giving and caring towards women.  They let women walk all over them.  So many men overseas do not respect them much for this, and laugh at how they kowtow to their own women.  But, they for the most part like American men, for the many gifts they can offer, and the fact they are usually very nice travels.

American women:  They break up into two parts.  The smarter American women, who when they go overseas they see right away they are out classed.  He says in Germany, the American women all of a sudden start dressing nicely, working out, and behaving like decent people.  People over seas like these women, because they see them behaving good, and don’t see the full side of the issue.

Then there are the American women who when they travel overseas demand the rest of the world changes for them.  These are exactly who people overseas call “ugly americans” and often these women will be cursed at and spit on by men and women in other countries.

LOL. I’ve had the same exact urge. Glad to know I’m not alone.

It breaks my heart to see posts like this. To rival your friend, I have lived in 5 countries, visited over 50, can speak 3 languages and am a US citizen, and also a woman. I hear things like this and wonder where on earth it comes from, and here it is again.

Firstly, there’s nothing wrong with your average American woman. When she moves to a new culture, she typically buys clothing that mirrors her coworkers’. If that’s being interpreted as “suddenly taking care of herself”, it’s disappointing.

As for the Ugly American syndrome, I can assure you it covers both sexes. The number of times I was working a service industry job and heard “that’s not how it is in America” was shocking — but it comes from men as much as women. In fact, American men were the ones more likely to talk down to me, compared both to non-US men and US women.

If you behave well and with respect when in someone else’s culture, they’ll think well of you. That’s just how it works, and it works the same for US men and women.
