The destruction of marriage and its abolition is one of the feminists goals. Marriage is a vehicel to gain access to divorce and its benefits. Girls if you sign up for something look at what you sign up for.

Well hell, there goes an annual 4 billion dollar industry. Magazines, wedding coordinators, flowers, honeymoon travels, bridal registries, dresses/tuxes, food, church services, reception cakes/entertainment/booze,  etc. Aw dammit!!!

I would hope you are all joking.  I’m married to a woman with 2 advanced degrees, she and I are both professors, have 2 kids, a great sex life, and can honestly say our lives are quite fulfilled.  This isn’t about equality…it’s about how do you help your partner attain their highest potential in all realms of their life.   As a guy, yes, it does challenge me to take on non-traditional roles in family life, but gosh…it has been great.  I have a much closer relationship with my children than most of my male friends.

Oh, btw, we’re both Christians with conservative political beliefs… go figure.

“Since marriage constitutes slavery for women, it is clear that the women’s movement must concentrate on attacking this institution. Freedom for women cannot be won without the abolition of marriage.” — Sheila Cronin, the leader of the feminist organization NOW

Ironic, that you all have to cite others as the basis of your opinion.  What is your experience in marriage/ relationships?   Traditional  marriages are doing so much better…look at their divorce rates.

I’ll take a shot. I’ve had a few long term relationships (I define that as 2+ months of dating), a few one night stands, and I am currently in a long term relationship (4+ months). At this point in my life, I’m not looking to settle down permanently. I think having a girlfriend has pros and cons – I like my independance, but its nice to have someone who cares about you. Will I get married? Not anytime soon, because I don’t think a man should get married in this social and legal climate unless he wants to start a family. Something I’m not looking to do at this point in my life. Would I want a career woman as a wife? no. The reason is two fold: first, my mom is a housewife and both my parents have an amazing marriage. Does this mean a 100% degree of succes? of course not. But, its the household I was raised in and looking how far I’ve come in life – I owe a lot to my parents’ roles as both provider and nurturer. Second, I want that same dynamic in my family if I ever choose to start one and a housewife is best suited for this goal.

THat’s fair…and rational.  Dude, I also grew up in family very similar to what your described.  I believe in those marriages, too.  See, that’s just it… I believe marriage is very personal and must be figured out between two people.  You like the traditional thing, great… if you want something different, great, too.  What iritates me is that folks on this listserv want to take a black/white approach to a very complex issue, that being marriage.  There’s a reason that divorce rates are also very high in traditional marriages…people haven’t learned how to communicate, negotiate roles, and deal with challenges in life. Hope you find the relationship you’re looking for…

Look waveguy a working woman doesnt mean she is a feminist women. Women got their laudo for bravery and intelligence well before feminism just look at the woman who discovered radioactivity or the first attempt of a woman to cross the atlantic both were well before feminism.

Precisely why I believe feminism will end in flames, with *women*, sick of your hate, rounding you up in droves and driving stakes through your black hearts.

Men will see it on television, simply switch it off and sit in silence.

Men have standards. Women will be compared. DEAL WITH IT.

I will concur that at least one strain of feminism is very anti-marriage:

” ‘Why,’ she said angrily. ‘Are so many married women deprived of the status of independent human beings?’ The answer was; because marriage is based on the property concept, therefore it must be abolished.”

Source: How The Women’s Movement Taught Women to Hate Men

The way I put it is one of the fundamental principles of 3rd wave feminism is that marriage is *the* institution which most oppresses women.

Part of the problem/confusion is that there are multiple types of feminism, so the word by itself has limited meaning
