Lawyer: No Formal Marriage
AP

Sept. 29 – Reality TV star Anna Nicole Smith exchanged vows with boyfriend Howard K. Stern on a boat near Nassau but there was no formal marriage and the ceremony is “not legally binding,” her attorney, Michael Scott, said Friday.
The exchange of vows took place aboard a catamaran Thursday, 18 days after Smith’s 20-year-old son Daniel Smith died as he was visiting her in a Nassau hospital, where she had given birth to a baby girl, Scott said.

The couple “exchanged vows before God” but did not obtain a marriage license, Scott told The Associated Press. Stern says he is the father of baby of the 38-year-old former Playboy playmate.

The thought of those two breeding is maybe a little much to ponder…

But the presumption that it’s “not legally binding” because “there was no formal marriage” is totally confused at best, since the statement because “there was a formal marriage” it’s “legally binding” is true only in a very superficial sense. As we’ve discussed multiple times, there’s no real “binding” about it these days, not if the other person decides they want to be “unbound”, except that the man can’t get away in any case. I suppose the article should have said “the kid makes it really legal”.

Heck, who knows, maybe the two mutants will somehow cancel each other out — or produce a new super-mutant species, with really big breasts and mouth, even though on second thought that wouldn’t really be some new thing.

In case anyone cares, another man has now filed a paternity suit against ANS, claiming he is the father, and is demanding a DNA test (among other things).

Who said celebrities can’t be entertaining and maybe even highlight some important public policy issues in the process?

This could be good. At least it’s getting better…
